Coconut Paradise Thai Restaurant Shanghai
My taxi took me through Fumin Lu and in a flash I noticed a sign with the name Coconut Paradise. I checked the net, read some reviews and we decided to try it the same evening.
Food
The Red Curry Chicken (60 Rmb) came last but ended up first taste-wise.
A great curry with tender pieces of chicken. Their mixed vegetable salad (38 Rmb) was run of the mill and the Seafood salad (70 Rmb) was only slightly better with the tiny bis of squid. We also tried their Pad Thai (60 Rmb).
Each Pad Thai is different. Whether it’s a street stall in Bangkok, the small Thai restaurant in Kunming or Coconut Paradise. I like it not too sweet so for me it was passable. Other people may like it. It would be nice if they place the chillies on the table without asking
Drinks
We drank a bottle of Concho y Toro Sunrise (Sauvignon Blanc, Chile - 180 Rmb) which is a very light, sour wine with almost a Champagne like after taste.
Drinkable but not something to put on the shopping list. The ice water was served with a slice of lime and free. I liked the detail of lime instead of lemon.
Service
Very friendly, but slow. The water and rice had to be asked for at least 3 times before it materialized. They forgot about our red curry but after reminding them it came and luckily so as it was the best dish.
Toilets
The flushing system wasn’t working at all. As most male tend to do I look were I pee. Looking at small floating pieces is no joy.
The other toilet was blocked by paper up to the brim. It doesn’t seem the staff check these facilities that much. The sink was nice so I decided to add that photo instead of the blocked toilet in case you will be eating so
Environment
The restaurant is in lush old villa with a nice terrace with green and water as well as balconies to dine on. The use of dimmed light gives the whole place a very nice romantic atmosphere.
If you want to sit outside although right now it may be a bit chilly for that, make a reservation beforehand. The place was packed. Outside and inside all tables were taken.
Verdict
The food is ok, not very special but not bad either. The location is great. You can hardly go wrong with an old villa, plants and trees and a terrace in my eyes. Prices are more based on the environment than on what the food should actually cost.
