Beijing Olympics Airco Police

Filed under: China Olympics — Shanghai @ 5:04 am

Beiing Olympic SweatI wasn’t planning on going in 2008 to the Beijing Olympics. Not because I don’t like sports but I’m not crazy about crowds and I’m sure there will be many.

For those contemplating of going there, there may be another reason to think twice.

According to a Dutch paper a new police unit has been formed, the Airco Police. No building can be cooler than 26 degrees celcius.

Hotels, offices, shopping centres and other buildings will be checked by the Airco Control. It will be Beijing’s contribution to the environment….

There will also be a special snitch line. Any disgruntled employees/shoppers etc can call the Airco Unit and tell that their office/shopping mall is too cool.

Way to go, sweating in your hotel, sweating while shopping, sweating in the crowds, probably sweating in the stadiums, just a hell of a lot of sweating.

I can imagine there are better ways to tackle environmental problems in China.

A Chinese Phonecall

Filed under: Shanghai Life — Shanghai @ 10:37 pm

Ring, Ring.

I pick up the phone, say my name.

Is W. there? I hear a female voice on the other side

No, she isn’t, I answer

Where is she?, is the new question.

And you are?, I ask

Where is she? is the reaction.

Tuut, tuut, is the sound she hears after I hang up.

Over the years my chinese phone interactions have considerably become more curt.

Stock Market in China, Sell the 7th of August 2008

Filed under: China Business — Shanghai @ 7:36 am

I’m no investor and I can still get confused between put and call so the following is definitely not based on any knowledge nor take it as an advice.

The stock market in Shanghai is going down a bit as investors seem to think new measures will be taken by the government.

When I read papers, blogs an other sources a couple of things stand out.

Investors don’t want to believe it can go down. Alan Greenspan warned for overheating but his views are discarded. What does he know about China, some get quick rich wannabes proclaim. Well maybe not much about China, but I heard he does know a little about economics. (more…)

Olympic Games Beds in Beijing

Filed under: China Olympics — Shanghai @ 6:07 am

The good news is that beds will be 10 cm’s wider compared to Athens. Have athletes gotten fatter over the last 4 years?

The bad news is that athletes expecting to spend some relaxing time in their apartment in the Olympic Village watching TV will have to pay extra.

According to International Olympic Committee, organizers are required to provide rooms that are the standard as a three-star hotel. (more…)
