Indalo Spanish Restaurant Shanghai

Filed under: Shanghai Restaurants — Shanghai @ 2:13 am

Indalo barIt was Sunday and we were in the mood for some brunch. Instead of going to one of the hotel buffets that can be quite good value for money, we wanted something else. Flipping through the free expat magazines I noticed Indalo. A Spanish brunch that starts at 14:00 ‘o clock. It fitted perfectly with our schedule. We took a taxi and ended up on the corner of Sinan Lu and Xiangshan Lu.

As it turned out we had the whole place for ourselves which wasn’t as bad as it sounds. (more…)

Brilliance BS6 Car Less Than Brilliant Test Results

Filed under: China Business — Shanghai @ 10:26 pm

In September 2005 there was a lot of press about the test results for the SUV Jiangling Landwind. It didn’t pass the crash test. In other words, the Dutch (ANWB) and German (ADAC) Car Consumer Associations couldn’t vouch for the safety.

They have tested another Chinese car, the Brilliance BS6 sedan, and it seems this one needs some attention as well. It failed to pass a benchmark German crash test.

It won a whoopy 1 star out of a possible 5 stars. The car retails for about 17.500 euro in Belgium.

After the Landwind test results, it stopped being sold. It isn’t unlikely the same will happen to the Brilliance unless it will be made safer.

Go here to see the video of the car in better circumstances.

DVD Shop Weihai Lu/Maoming Lu

Filed under: Shanghai Prices — Shanghai @ 2:16 am

Buying fake dvd’s in the same place for more than 2 years is mind boggling. The price of dvd’s we pay is 7 kuai for dvd-5 quality and if you buy a tv-series we pay 8 Rmb per disk.

Nothing new and nothing exciting. Once you have agreed a price, unless the dvd market becomes a seller’s market, it makes sense to keep it like that. It stops the energy sucking bargaining process and it’s more time efficient.

But not when the middle aged woman is in charge. Then suddenly she wants a hell of lot more kuai per dvd. Who cares you have been there last week, who cares that you buy a lot. There’s one thing on her mind. To rather have that extra kuai now and lose future sales than having a happy returning customer.

My advice, if the middle aged woman is sitting behind the desk, don’t buy and walk on. If the old man is sitting there, buy. They have a great variety of dvd’s but please ditch the …..

Tailor Chen Plays Computer Games

Filed under: Shanghai Life — Shanghai @ 2:16 am

Walking in Nanchang Lu we noticed Tailor Chen. A male showed us the fabrics and the price for a pair of pants seemed ok, 550 Rmb.

We were willing to buy and thought we’d try to bargain a bit. Just a little and if they had come up with a good counter offer or even a vague promise that we could get a discount next time, we would have accepted and paid. (more…)
