China Clean Websites

Filed under: Chinese Multi Media — Shanghai @ 11:02 pm

In a drive to purify the internet even further the leading [tag]Internet[/tag] portals (among them [tag]Sina[/tag].com, [tag]Sohu[/tag].com, [tag]Baidu[/tag].com, and [tag]Yahoo'[/tag]s [tag]Chinese[/tag] Website) have drawn up a joint proposal to stem “unhealthy Internet cultures.”

“No indecent texts and photos, no search agents for such contents, no links to unhealthy websites, and no carrying games with sex and violence contents,” it proposed.

[tag]China[/tag]daily is not mentioned as part of the websites to join this admirable form of progress. I wonder why if you see their pic galleries.

P.S.: And don’t forget, in Shanghai there are plans to set up a citizen advisory panel to prevent advertisers from erecting billboards featuring scantily clad women and other images that might offend local sensibilities.

Shanghai Shuffle Bar Review

Filed under: Shanghai Life — Shanghai @ 11:35 pm

shuffle barIt was dark outside when we entered and almost darker when we were inside the Shuffle bar, a new place in [tag]Shanghai[/tag].

Luckily the waiter had a flashlight which was useful for ordering.

We went there to hear The Georgia Sam [tag]Blues[/tag] Band (plus pretending to be still young and into the scene, at least me) and we did hear. (The being young and into the scene part is a past station I am afraid)

On arrival it was playing at such a volume my friend pulled out some paper and throtted it in his ears. The second set, they tweaked the speakers a bit which was very favorable to their playing.

Actually a great blues band and worthy of more listeners than there were. Every night the shuffle bar has live music and most of the performances are free. I like the place. As mentioned it’s pitch dark, spacious and a corona costs you 30 Rmb.

CCTV New Website

Filed under: Chinese Multi Media — Shanghai @ 11:35 pm

[tag]CCTV[/tag] has a new website for all [tag]English[/tag] speaking people around the world.

The [tag]American[/tag] [tag]Fox[/tag] Cable network is one of the partners which seems a match made in heaven.

Biased + Biased makes Unbiased?

I have visited the site a couple of times and at least half of the time pages don’t render.

Their slogan is “Your window on [tag]China[/tag] and the [tag]World[/tag]”.

The Year of Berlusconi in China

Filed under: China News Soft — Shanghai @ 10:09 pm

Year of Italy in ChinaIt’s the year of [tag]Italy[/tag] in [tag]China[/tag], actually also the year of Russia and the Year of the British Poems in the [tag]Shanghai[/tag] subway, but I digress.

There are [tag]pasta[/tag] exchanges (the jury is still out on who invented the long pieces of dough), and other cultural feats.

From the [tag]Year of Italy in China[/tag] website:

“Our two countries share an affinity that has been passed on from generation to generation and is still growing stronger.”

Emperor Berlusconi (aka the premier of Italy) has added a very special insight to this that I am sure will be appreciated.

“I have been accused many times of saying communists eat babies,” Mr [tag]Berlusconi[/tag] told a rally of his [tag]Forza Italia[/tag] party.

“Go and read the black book on communism and you’ll find that under [tag]Mao[/tag]’s China they didn’t eat babies but they boiled them to fertilise the fields.”

CCTV Quote of the Day

Filed under: China News Soft — Shanghai @ 8:50 am

The first [tag]meeting[/tag] of the China-Brazil High-level Coordination and Cooperation Committee aka the CBHCCC is happening right now.

[tag]CCTV 9[/tag] (aka The Closed Content Television) here in [tag]China[/tag] had some promising news.

I quote [tag]Hong Kong[/tag] presenter James:

“[tag]Brazil[/tag] and China will promote cooperation in various fields”

I am sure you didn’t want to miss that one.

To have some good online [tag]laughs[/tag], go to [tag]CCTV[/tag] and click that red button on the right to see it live.

You still want to know why dvd’s are popular?

China Chopsticks Tax

Filed under: China News Soft — Shanghai @ 7:29 am

Chopsticks Trash[tag]China[/tag] is going to tax the chopstick.

According to the Dutch radio

5% will be levied on wooden [tag]chopsticks[/tag] from next month.

Yearly about 1,3 miljoen m3 wood is used to produce 15 billion (pairs of) chopsticks.

A couple of years ago, 2001 to be exact, the number according to the [tag]Washington Times[/tag] was

45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks every year, cutting down as many as 25 million trees in the process, according to government statistics.

Update: Dutch people can’t count. The BBC also mentions 45 Billion.

I can hardly imagine that in 5 years the number of chopsticks has decreased. It’s also a difference of 11.5 versus 34.6 pairs of chopsticks per person per year so I’ll go with the Americans eventhough the number seems still rather low.

I like the tax and I am curious how much effect it will sort.

Here some tips on how to use chopsticks.
