How Much Does A Dog Cost in China

Filed under: Shanghai Prices — Shanghai @ 10:18 pm

tibetan mastiffHonestly, I wouldn’t know as we don’t keep a dog and also don’t intend to do so as space is limited in Shanghainese apartments and the last thing I’ll ever consider is getting a dog smaller than a rat. So, no, no dog for me. But for China’s nouveaux riches the Tibetan Mastiff is apparently a status symbol worth paying more, as it’s a rare breed. More than 30,000 RMb for a puppy and grown males are valued up to 300,000 Rmb.

The Times has added a list for reference of dog prices in China (not sure how accurate they are so please fill in if you have ever bought a canine here in Shanghai)

China’s top dogs

Pekinese 500 yuan

Dachshund 1,000 yuan

Basset hound 3,000 yuan

White wire fox terrier 1,500 yuan

Pomeranian 800 yuan

  3. If I understand correctly you also need to pay some sort of fee for a dog license in China.

Personally I wouldn’t really consider having a dog here as my apartment is far too small and areas near my apartment don’t offer much for talking walks. I seriously considered it though while living in PuDong near Century Park. That area has quite a few areas for nice dog walks.

  4. 500 for a pekinese is about right.

Me and my girlfriend bought ours for a bit more.

He’s known around the neighbourhood as “800 kuai Pepe.”
