Monday Morning Rant

Filed under: Shanghai Life — Shanghai @ 5:36 pm

Yesterday I realized again why I hate shopping in supermarkets in China.

The Lotus Supermarket in Pudong, Shanghai:

  • Asking staff where one has to go to move to a different floor only results in a shrug of the shoulder and vaguely pointing of a hand while at the same time the head is doing it’s best to stare somewhere in oblivion.
  • The cheese and meat section has a lovely counter, the only thing lacking is a person behind it. It takes some gesturing, walking over to somewhere else to get a person willing to help. Disturbing these persons in their very important conversations with colleagues is, I admit, rather intrusive.
  • Taxi stand, we don’t have a taxi stand anymore, just carry your kilo’s up the stairs, wrestle though the crowds and hope there is a taxi. Thanks for shopping and by the way, prices are roughly the same as in the small supermarket around the corner

Bloody Comment Spam

Filed under: Chinese Multi Media — Shanghai @ 1:56 pm

Just spent 15 minutes of my life deleting one by one 200 lovely comment spam messages. Comment spam, for those of you who have not been exposed to it yet, are comments in the form of very annoying advertising messages. Comments that add nothing besides letting the websurfer now where to go for gambling etc. If only they would compensate me for the trouble by posting a cleverly written advertorial comment or maybe even clicking an add it might be bearable. But just this blatant crap have made me decide to turn off the comment section until I have implemented some serious anti-comment spam filters.

Update: I just counted again as I get an email for every “comment’ that is placed.. 393 is the current result, 393 times clicking “delete”

Property Bubble or Not?

Filed under: China Business — Shanghai @ 9:56 pm

There has been a lot of talk recently about the property bubble in the Shanghai real estate market. Prices have soared to more than 20000 Kuai/Square Meter and they just seem to like the sky.

The local government is trying to cool things a bit but it has to be seen if this will have any effect. A few weeks ago we thought it could be fun to take a look at some apartments that are available. We went to the area we like (no, won’t tell you which one:) and talked to some real estate agents.

In Shanghai it is really never a problem to find a real estate agency anyway. There are more real estate agents than taxi’s. Last weekend we saw our first apartment and although location wise almost perfect, for us anyway, it is surprising how the original architect has been able to f*** up an absolute great chance of creating a real livable place. Despite the great location, it was just a dark hole. For 20.000 a square meter of course. Well, this was only the first so let’s wait and see what more we will see. If the market goes down as promised I will be even better.

To get a bit more insight you can read this thread.

Shanghai Construction

Filed under: Shanghai Life — Shanghai @ 12:55 pm

Sometime ago, in March, I put up a picture I made from a construction site near me to get a close up of what is happening in the Shanghai real estate market. It’s a bit more than 2 months later now and time to show the speed of building.

The constant noise of drilling, the grinding of old trucks and the occasional honking of horns have become part of my sleeping pattern. No drill, even when it seems to be a wall away, will make me jump out of bed, entice me to shout or have any more influence on me than the song of a passing bird. Silence has become unknown and I probably can’t sleep if I will be ever confronted with it again.

Do Blogs Have Any Influence

Filed under: Chinese Multi Media — Shanghai @ 7:08 pm

Nicholas Kristof from the NY Times writes today about “Death by a Thousand Blogs”.

He starts of with “ The Chinese Communist Party survived a brutal civil war with the Nationalists, battles with American forces in Korea and massive pro-democracy demonstrations at Tiananmen Square. But now it may finally have met its match – the Internet. ” and it’s an interesting article.

That said, never underestimate.

New year, new …

Filed under: Private — Shanghai @ 8:08 pm

Yesterday I went to a nice dinner where we discussed Radio Shanghai. The idea is setting up a collaborative podcast website to share with the world some Shangai/China related podcasts. Fons of the China Herald has more to say about it.

One of the things that came up was consistency. If you want to make this kind of iniative work you need to have consistency once you start podcasting. Whether it is once a week or once a month, as long as it is consistent.

Turning 36 today, which is not a great achievement in itself, maybe a good moment to apply this consistency also to my blog, applying it to my life is maybe something for when I turn 37.
